WEEK 2 SUMMARY AND REFLECTION, BURNING QUESTION A big part of this week has involved beginning to work on our group design thinking project and getting acquainted with the Design Studio and working on the process of design thinking with our group as we begin to formulate problems and solutions for our project in the Math/Business curriculum area. We also looked at SIOP Method and learned that Nebraska schools mainly utilize CALLA (SIOP Approach) to teach ESL students. Also, the three tiers of vocabulary is useful for refining what to emphasize in language objectives. It was useful to see the six Nebraska ELP levels document to help determine student background. We picked a research paper topic and were introduced to the requirements for constructing a lesson plan. My thoughts on what we have covered this week include: still trying to learn the “alphabet soup” of acronyms, piece together and/or remember how the different approaches are different from each other (they...

REFLECTION ON DESIGN THINKING EXPERIENCES When we began the envelope activity, I really wondered where it might be going. Of course, I realized it was a demonstration of a way to involve ESL/ELL (or any students really) in using all their senses and creativity in a simple way with more complex results while interacting and learning with a classmate. A peer activity such as this is likely to be non-threatening versus having the student do this alone or just for the teacher as an assignment, thereby lowering the affective filter, using it to engage in speaking and writing English words to describe an object, such as the marker, and then thinking of ways to improve it. It would also arouse curiosity and perhaps lead to problem-solving if the activity were to be carried out to making an improvement to the marker for themselves. In looking at the SIOP model, it would allow the students to build on what they already know and promote higher order thinking skills. A teacher could ...

SUMMARY AND REFLECTION WEEK 1, Dianne Petersen I took this course because I need to renew my teaching certificate by the end of August. I chose this class because it was available when I could take it, but also because it seemed practical. I am finding that, indeed, it is practical. As a vocational business and technology teacher—I support hands-on all the way. What I have learned and observed this week that has impacted me most includes the demonstration of various ways we have interacted to get to know each other in the class very quickly, learn material for the class, and begin to learn about the methods and research regarding the difficulties of language acquisition of ELL students. Getting to know classmates quickly is not always something that happens. I have been substitute teaching this past year and have been in some LPS high school classes where the students don’t even know the names of the people sitting around them halfway into the semester (so I sometimes ...
